🚨 2003 Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG: Emergency Neutral
The 2003 ML55 AMG uses a traditional center console-mounted automatic transmission lever with an electronic shift interlock button on the front of the shifter handle.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered opening on the center console directly to the left of the shift lever base, near the driver's side.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small rectangular plastic cap covering the override slot.
- Insert the screwdriver or key firmly into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if battery power exists) and pulling the shift lever to Neutral.
- If successfully in Neutral, remove the tool from the override slot and verify the shifter indicator shows 'N'.
- Keep your foot on the brake and use wheel chocks—the vehicle can now roll freely.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Insert the key into the ignition and turn to position 1 or 2 (this may work mechanically even without power). Use the override slot with a tool as described above—depressing the override should release the shifter mechanically without requiring brake pedal input when no power is present. The transmission will physically shift to Neutral.
