The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered slot directly to the left of the shifter base on the console, typically covered by a small rectangular plastic cap.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the key blade to carefully pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter to neutral.
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
