⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ACC or ON) if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small covered opening near the base of the shifter on the left side
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the small rectangular cover cap
- Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to N
- If no power: continue holding the override down and manually move the shifter to N without pressing the brake

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Insert tool into override slot, press down firmly, and move shifter to N. The steering lock will engage when power is lost - steering will be locked. Do not attempt to steer; use a flatbed or dolly for front wheels.
