The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or 2 (ON) if battery has any residual power
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the column shifter base, near where it meets the steering column
- Remove the small rectangular plastic cover over the override slot by prying gently with a flat tool
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot
- Press the override down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the battery is completely dead and the steering column lock is engaged, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery first to release the steering lock before the vehicle can be moved safely

With zero 12V power, the electronic steering lock (ESL) will remain engaged on most W221 models, preventing steering even in neutral. You must provide 12V power (jump box or jump-start) to release the steering lock before the vehicle can be safely moved or towed. The shift lock override will work mechanically without power, but addressing the steering lock is critical.
