🚨 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Emergency Neutral
The 2014 S-Class (W222 generation, first year) uses a column-mounted electronic gear selector stalk on the right side of the steering column.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- If any 12V power is available, turn the ignition to position 1 or 2, or press the START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override access on the column shifter stalk assembly - look for a small covered slot near the base of the stalk where it meets the column
- Remove the small plastic cover by prying carefully with a flat tool
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot
- Press and hold the override while moving the selector stalk to the Neutral position
- If completely dead, you may need to provide 12V power via jump box to the battery (located in engine bay or trunk depending on model) to release electronic steering lock before safe movement

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the W222 electronic steering lock (ESL) will remain engaged, preventing steering. The shift lock override may function mechanically, but you cannot safely move the vehicle with locked steering. Jump-start or connect a jump box to provide power to release the steering lock. On models with battery in trunk, there is a jump-start terminal under the hood.
