🚨 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Emergency Neutral

The W222 S-Class uses a column-mounted stalk shifter on the right side of the steering column (similar to a turn signal stalk).

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is applied
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (press Start button without brake pedal)
  3. Locate the shift-lock override access cover on the right side of the column stalk base near where it meets the column
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the small rubber or plastic cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, move the column stalk down to the D position, then continue pulling down through D to reach N (Neutral)
  7. The stalk will spring back to center position once N is engaged - verify gear position on the dashboard display if power is available
  8. Release the override, replace the cap, and vehicle can now be rolled or towed
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the column stalk shifter lock is mechanical and the override should still function. If the override slot is not accessible or does not release the shifter, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery (located in engine bay on right side or in trunk depending on model) to at least get ignition-on power, then use the override. As a last resort, the vehicle can be winched onto a flatbed with wheels locked.
