🚨 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Emergency Neutral

The all-new W223 S-Class (2021+) uses a column-mounted stalk shifter on the right side of the steering column, redesigned from the W222 but similar in operation.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is applied
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (press Start button without brake pedal twice)
  3. Locate the shift-lock override access on the column stalk assembly - look for a small cap or slot near the base of the stalk where it meets the column
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade from the key fob to carefully pry off any covering cap
  5. Insert the tool into the override slot and press firmly to release the shift lock mechanism
  6. While holding the override depressed, move the column stalk downward to select N (Neutral)
  7. The stalk will return to center position - verify N is displayed on the instrument cluster if power is available
  8. Release the override, replace any cap, and vehicle can now be rolled or towed
Shift-lock override location
Override access is located on or near the column stalk base where it meets the steering column housing, typically on the right or bottom side of the stalk mount - look for a small removable cap or access hole
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the W223 S-Class may have additional electronic interlocks that prevent shifter movement even with the override. First attempt to jump-start the 12V battery (located in trunk under floor panel on right side) to get at least ignition-on power. If jump-starting is not possible and the override does not release the shifter, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground - DO NOT attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground as the transmission may be locked in Park electronically.
