🚨 2021 Mercedes-Benz S500 W223: Emergency Neutral

The W223 S-Class uses a small electronic column stalk shifter on the right side of the steering column with fully electronic gear selection and no mechanical linkage.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the electric parking brake if possible (press P button on center console)
  2. If battery has any charge, attempt to jump start the 12V battery located in the rear cargo area (right side under floor panel) - the W223 requires 12V power for nearly all functions
  3. Once power is restored, press the brake pedal and push the column stalk up or down to select Neutral
  4. If jump starting is successful but the shifter still won't respond, check the center display screen for transmission fault messages
  5. If absolutely no power can be restored and the transmission is stuck in Park, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed truck - do NOT attempt to tow
  6. For flatbed loading with no power: the transmission has an emergency mechanical release accessed from underneath the vehicle, but this requires a lift and should only be performed by qualified technicians or the tow operator
Shift-lock override location
No user-accessible shift lock override in the cabin. Emergency mechanical transmission release is underneath the vehicle at the transmission housing, requiring lift access and special tools.
With zero electrical power
The W223 is highly dependent on 12V electrical power for all systems. With completely dead battery: (1) You cannot shift out of Park from inside the cabin - there is no manual override accessible to the driver. (2) The electronic steering lock will remain engaged. (3) The parking brake is electronic and will remain engaged. The ONLY option with zero power is flatbed transport. The 12V battery is in the rear cargo area under the right-side floor panel - jump it with a portable jump starter or another vehicle if possible. Even low voltage may allow enough function to shift to Neutral.
