🚨 2023 Mercedes-Benz S500 W223: Emergency Neutral

The W223 S-Class uses a column-mounted electronic shifter stalk on the right side of the steering column.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (press START button without brake pedal) if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. If the shifter stalk will not move to N position electrically, locate the shift lock override access.
  4. Remove the small rectangular cover panel on the lower right side of the steering column shroud near the shifter stalk base.
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the override slot and press firmly while attempting to move the shifter stalk to N.
  6. If the electronic shifter remains locked, the transmission must be mechanically released from underneath the vehicle—this requires lifting the car and accessing the transmission park release lever near the transmission pan (dealer/specialist procedure).

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the column stalk shifter will not respond. The shift lock override near the column may allow stalk movement but will not electrically shift the transmission. You must either jump-start the 12V battery to power the transmission control module, or access the mechanical park release lever on the transmission itself from underneath the vehicle. The transmission park pawl release is typically a yellow or red lever on the driver's side of the transmission—consult factory service information for exact location on 9G-TRONIC transmission.
