🚨 2009 Mercedes-Benz S550 W221: Emergency Neutral
The W221 S550 uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ACC or ON) if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening on the left side of the shifter base, beneath a plastic trim cap that pries off with a flat tool.
- Remove the trim cap by gently prying it upward.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to neutral.
- If the shifter feels locked, verify you are pressing the override fully—it may require significant downward pressure.
- Once in neutral, replace the trim cap and ensure the parking brake remains engaged or wheel chocks are in place.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base, under a removable plastic trim cap—approximately 1 inch from the shifter lever itself.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You do NOT need ignition power to use the override—simply remove the cap, insert tool into the slot, press down hard, and shift. The transmission will mechanically release. However, without any power, the steering lock will engage and you cannot steer; the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels straight or dragged with wheel dollies.
