🚨 1995 Mercedes-Benz S600: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 S600 (W140 chassis) uses a traditional column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly applied.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position I (accessory) or II (on) if battery power is available.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: on W140 models, look for a small circular or rectangular cap/cover on the shifter console near the base of the shifter gate.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to carefully pry off the override cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or a similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If no power is available, continue holding the override down and manually move the shifter through its gate to Neutral position—you may need moderate force.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap near the base of the column shifter gate; exact location varies slightly but typically on the right side or front face of the shifter housing
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you will have no power steering, power brakes, or electrical systems. The shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. After releasing the shifter, you may need to manually steer (very heavy) or use a steering wheel lock bypass if equipped. Ensure all wheels can roll freely before attempting to move the vehicle.
