🚨 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL: Emergency Neutral

The R129 SL uses a traditional floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (ignition on) if possible—this energizes the shift interlock solenoid.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: remove the small rectangular trim cover on the shifter console, typically to the left or front of the shifter base (varies slightly by model year, but usually marked with a key symbol).
  4. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or the ignition key itself into the override slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if you have any power) and move the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If successful in reaching Neutral, the vehicle can now roll freely—ensure wheel chocks are in place before releasing the parking brake.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular trim cover near the shifter base, typically to the left or front; exact position varies slightly by trim but usually marked with a key or lock symbol.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift interlock solenoid is de-energized but mechanically locked. You MUST use the shift lock override: remove the trim cover near the shifter base, insert the key or screwdriver into the override slot, and press firmly while attempting to shift. If the shifter remains stuck, the mechanical interlock may require significant force or the steering lock may also be engaged—steering wheel may need slight rotation. In worst case, vehicle must be winched onto flatbed with wheels locked.
