The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition key to position II (ignition on) if possible—this energizes the shift interlock solenoid.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: remove the small rectangular trim cover on the shifter console, typically to the left or front of the shifter base (varies slightly by model year, but usually marked with a key symbol).
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or the ignition key itself into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if you have any power) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If successful in reaching Neutral, the vehicle can now roll freely—ensure wheel chocks are in place before releasing the parking brake.
