🚨 2010 Mercedes-Benz SL: Emergency Neutral

The R230 SL (2003-2011) uses a floor-mounted electronic selector lever with multi-stage shift interlock controlled by the transmission control module.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 2 (ignition on) if possible—the transmission control module needs power to release the shift lock.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. If the shifter still won't move, locate the shift lock override: there is a small rectangular or circular access cover on the shifter console, typically directly forward or to the left of the shifter base.
  5. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade to pry off the override cover.
  6. Insert the key blade or a small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter rearward to Neutral.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll—keep the parking brake engaged until ready to move.
Shift-lock override location
Small removable cover on the shifter console, typically forward or to the left of the shifter base; pry off with key blade or screwdriver to access the override slot underneath.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the R230's electronic transmission control module cannot release the shift lock even with the override—the system is electronically controlled. You MUST jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source (jump box or another vehicle) to provide enough power to turn the ignition to position 2. Then use the shift lock override procedure. Without ANY power, the transmission remains mechanically locked and the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with parking brake released (or dragged with wheels skidding—not recommended). The R230 is particularly difficult without power due to its electronic architecture.
