🚨 2011 Mercedes-Benz SL: Emergency Neutral

The R230-generation SL (2003-2012) uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ACC/ON) if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override cover on the center console - it is a small rectangular cover directly adjacent to the shifter base on the right side
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cover
  5. Insert the key or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral
  6. If successful, the shifter will move freely to N position
  7. Keep foot on brake pedal throughout this process if any electrical power is available
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot is mechanical and will still function. You may need more force to press the override button and move the shifter simultaneously. The steering lock will remain engaged, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels straight or use a wheel dolly.
