The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ACC/ON) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override cover on the center console - it is a small rectangular cover directly adjacent to the shifter base on the right side
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cover
- Insert the key or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral
- If successful, the shifter will move freely to N position
- Keep foot on brake pedal throughout this process if any electrical power is available
