🚨 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL: Emergency Neutral

The R231-generation SL (2013-2020) features a modern electronic selector lever on the center console that returns to a center position after each shift input.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position (position 2) - even with weak battery this may provide enough power
  3. Locate the shift lock override access point on the right side of the shifter base - look for a small cover or rubber plug near where the shifter meets the console
  4. If there is a cover, carefully pry it off with a small flathead screwdriver or key blade
  5. Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override hole and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, lift the shifter stalk upward and push forward (toward the dashboard) to the first detent - this is Neutral
  7. The shifter will spring back to center position but transmission should now be in Neutral - you may hear a click or feel mechanical feedback
  8. With power available, the instrument cluster will show 'N' to confirm
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the electronic shifter base on center console, typically accessed via small cover or plug near the base mounting point
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery (no power at all), the shift lock override is mechanical but the electronic shifter position may be difficult to verify without instrument cluster display. The shifter will physically move and mechanically engage neutral if done correctly, but you will not see 'N' illuminated. Steering lock will remain engaged - flatbed towing only. Do NOT attempt to jump-start to verify position if vehicle is already on flatbed.
