The R231-generation SL uses an electronic selector lever on the center console that returns to center position; the 2014 model has the refined version of this system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position (position 2) - even with weak battery this may provide enough power
- Locate the shift lock override access on the right side of the shifter base near the console
- Look for a small rectangular cover, rubber plug, or access slot - it may be integrated into the shifter base trim on passenger side
- Remove the cover if present using a small flathead screwdriver or key blade
- Insert a small screwdriver into the override hole and press down firmly
- While holding the override depressed, lift the shifter stalk upward and push forward (toward dash) to the first detent position for Neutral
- The shifter will return to center but transmission should engage Neutral with a mechanical click
- If power is available, verify 'N' displays on instrument cluster

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override still functions but without instrument cluster confirmation. You must rely on mechanical feel (detent click) to confirm Neutral engagement. Steering column will remain locked, requiring flatbed towing. The electronic parking brake may also be engaged - if EPB warning light was on before battery death, rear wheels may be locked and vehicle must be dragged onto flatbed.
