The R231-generation SL features an electronic selector lever on the center console that returns to center position after each input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position (position 2) using the key or start button - even minimal battery power may allow shifting
- Locate the shift lock override on the right side of the shifter base where it meets the center console
- Look for a small cover, rubber plug, or access slot integrated into the shifter base trim on the passenger side
- If a cover is present, carefully pry it off with a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override access hole and press down firmly
- While maintaining pressure on the override, lift the shifter stalk up and push forward (toward dashboard) to the first detent - this is Neutral
- The shifter will spring back to center position but you should feel/hear a mechanical engagement confirming Neutral
- If any power is available, check instrument cluster for 'N' display to confirm
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the electronic shifter base on center console, typically a small cover or integrated access slot in the base trim near passenger side
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override will still operate but without visual confirmation on the instrument cluster. You must rely on tactile/audible feedback (click or detent feel) when the transmission mechanically engages Neutral. The steering lock will remain engaged, requiring flatbed transport. Electronic parking brake (if equipped) may remain applied - if rear wheels are locked, vehicle must be dragged or winched onto flatbed.
