🚨 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL500 R129: Emergency Neutral

The 1999 SL500 R129 uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter lever with a mechanical cable linkage and P-R-N-D-3-2 gate positions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake if functional.
  2. Insert the key and turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ACC or ON) if battery power is available.
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Press the shift lock release button on the left side of the shifter lever (directly below the thumb position) and move the shifter from P through R to N.
  5. If the shift interlock solenoid is preventing movement due to a failed brake-light switch, locate the shift lock override slot.
  6. The override access is a small covered rectangular slot on the left side of the shifter base console trim, just forward of the shifter lever.
  7. Pry off or slide back the small cover cap to expose the manual release slot.
  8. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or ignition key blade into the slot and press firmly downward to mechanically release the shift lock.
  9. While holding the override depressed and pressing the brake pedal, move the shifter to N.
  10. If the vehicle must roll without any brake pedal input, keep the override depressed and shift to N, then release carefully.

With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead, the shift interlock solenoid will remain engaged by spring tension. Use the manual shift lock override slot (described above) to mechanically bypass the solenoid and shift to neutral. No electrical power is required once you access the override release; the shifter linkage is mechanical cable-driven in the R129.
