The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Insert the key and turn to position 2 if any battery power remains
- Locate the shift-lock override: look for a small covered slot or removable trim piece at the base of the shifter console, typically on the left front side near the driver
- Remove the protective cap or trim cover—it may require prying with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override release mechanism and press down or pull (depending on the design)
- While activating the override, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to neutral
- The shifter should release from Park; once in neutral, release the override
