🚨 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230: Emergency Neutral

The R230 SL500 uses a floor-mounted console lever shifter with electronic shift-lock controlled by the brake pedal switch and Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS).

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Insert the key and turn to position 2 if any battery power remains
  3. Locate the shift-lock override: look for a small covered slot or removable trim piece at the base of the shifter console, typically on the left front side near the driver
  4. Remove the protective cap or trim cover—it may require prying with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override release mechanism and press down or pull (depending on the design)
  6. While activating the override, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to neutral
  7. The shifter should release from Park; once in neutral, release the override
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
The R230 transmission (722.6) is electronically controlled via the EIS and TCU. With a completely dead battery, the park pawl will remain engaged even with the shift-lock override, as the transmission control unit requires minimal 12V power to command release. Jump-start the battery to restore minimal voltage, then use the override. If jump-starting is not possible, flatbed towing is mandatory—do NOT dolly tow an R230 without transmission in neutral.
