The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position—even with weak battery, you may get enough power to enable shift release.
- If battery has power: press the brake pedal firmly and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no power or brake-light switch failure: locate the shift lock override access near the shifter base on the center console.
- On R232 models, look for a small cover or slot typically on the lower left or front side of the shifter surround—remove any cover found.
