🚨 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 SL55 AMG (R232 generation, reintroduced after hiatus) features a modern electronic console shifter with integrated shift-by-wire technology.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake.
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position—even with weak battery, you may get enough power to enable shift release.
  3. If battery has power: press the brake pedal firmly and move the shifter to Neutral.
  4. If no power or brake-light switch failure: locate the shift lock override access near the shifter base on the center console.
  5. On R232 models, look for a small cover or slot typically on the lower left or front side of the shifter surround—remove any cover found.
  6. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or override tool into the slot and press/hold while attempting to move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the electronic shifter remains completely unresponsive with zero power, the transmission may need to be placed in Neutral via the wheel-well access (underneath the vehicle, driver-side of transmission)—this is a dealer/tow-operator procedure.
  8. Once in Neutral, load the vehicle onto a flatbed with all wheels up or use proper towing dollies.
Shift-lock override location
Small cover or slot near the shifter base on the center console, typically on the lower left or forward side of the shifter assembly; exact position may vary by model year within R232 generation.
With zero electrical power
The R232 SL-Class uses an advanced electronic transmission control system. With completely dead battery, the shifter override may not function if the shift-by-wire system is fully unpowered. In such cases, the transmission itself has a mechanical release accessed from underneath the vehicle (usually near the transmission bell housing, driver side)—this requires lifting the vehicle and should be performed by a tow operator or technician. Steering will be locked without power.
