🚨 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL600 R230: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 R230 SL600 uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical gate and electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is applied if functional
  2. Locate the shift lock override slot: a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap on the left side of the shifter console, just forward and left of the shifter base
  3. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool
  4. Insert the ignition key (or a flathead screwdriver if key is unavailable) into the override slot
  5. Press down firmly on the key/tool while simultaneously depressing the shifter release button and moving the shifter from P to N
  6. Keep the override depressed until the shifter reaches N position
  7. Replace the cap after shifting to neutral

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override will still function mechanically on the R230. Follow the override procedure above—the mechanical linkage does not require electrical power to release. However, you will not be able to illuminate the shifter position indicator.
