🚨 2024 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 SL63 AMG (R232 generation) uses a modern electronic column-mounted shifter stalk or small console-mounted electronic selector with full electronic control.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the electronic parking brake if functional.
  2. Attempt to enter the vehicle and press the brake pedal while pressing the START/STOP button without pressing the brake initially to enter accessory mode.
  3. If the 12V battery has sufficient charge for accessory mode, the shifter may respond: move the shifter stalk down (or press the console selector button) to engage Neutral.
  4. If the vehicle has completely dead 12V power, you will need to provide external power: connect a jump starter or jumper cables to the 12V battery (located in the rear trunk area on most SL models), then enter accessory mode and shift to Neutral.
  5. If external power cannot be provided and the electronic shifter remains locked, the vehicle cannot be shifted into Neutral without dealership-level diagnostics or manual transmission release (underneath vehicle—professional assistance required).
  6. For towing: the 2024 SL63 should be transported on a flatbed only due to the AWD 4MATIC+ system and electronic parking brake; do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground.
Shift-lock override location
The R232 generation does not have a traditional mechanical shift lock override slot accessible to the driver. Neutral selection requires at least accessory-mode electrical power.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function. You must provide external 12V power via jump-start or portable jump starter to enable accessory mode. The 12V battery is located in the rear trunk—access may require manual trunk release (key cylinder in trunk lid or emergency release cable inside vehicle). If no power can be provided, professional flatbed transport is required without ability to shift to Neutral.
