🚨 2020 Mercedes-Benz SLC43 AMG R172: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 SLC43 AMG (R172 facelift) uses a traditional PRND console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 if 12V power is available (key present, turn without starting).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the shift lock release button (small rectangular button) located on the right side of the shifter base, just behind the shifter boot.
  5. While holding the release button, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  6. If the electronic parking brake will not release due to no power, you may need to use a flatbed or manually release the EPB via the rear brake calipers (requires tools and access).

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot turn the ignition to any position. You must jump-start the 12V battery (under hood) or connect a portable power supply to gain enough power to at least turn the ignition to position 1 and use the shift lock override. The electronic parking brake will also not release without power; flatbed towing is strongly recommended.
