🚨 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Kompressor R170: Emergency Neutral

The 1999 SLK230 Kompressor (R170) features a conventional PRND console-mounted shift lever with mechanical shift lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. If 12V power is available, turn the ignition key to position 1 or 2 (do not attempt to start).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: a small covered opening on the left side of the shifter base, near the front of the shift gate trim.
  4. Remove the small plastic cover cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool.
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar object into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. Release the parking brake (mechanical foot-operated on these models).

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the mechanical shift lock override still functions. You do NOT need to turn the ignition; simply use the override slot and shift to Neutral. The parking brake is mechanical (foot pedal) and can be released manually. The steering will be locked, so the vehicle must be towed on a flatbed or with the front wheels off the ground.
