⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied.
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 or 2 (ACC or ON) if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the small plastic cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever out of Park.
- Move the shifter to Neutral, then you can release the override and move the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override is mechanical and does not require battery power. Simply use the override slot as described. If the steering lock is engaged with no power, the steering wheel will remain locked—flatbed towing with rear wheels up or dolly under front wheels is required.
