🚨 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG R171: Emergency Neutral

The R171 SLK55 AMG uses a floor-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock; this generation introduced a redesigned console with the override access point integrated into the shifter surround.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 1 or 2 (ACC or ON) if any battery power remains.
  3. Locate the shift lock release: there is a small rectangular plastic cover on the console immediately forward and to the left of the shifter base.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver, key blade, or similar flat tool to carefully pry off the plastic cover.
  5. Insert the tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
  7. Once in Neutral, release the override tool and the vehicle can be moved or towed.

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is a mechanical release and functions without battery power. However, with a completely dead battery, the steering lock (if engaged) will remain locked. In this case, flatbed towing or a dolly under the front wheels is necessary to avoid steering damage.
