⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery voltage permits—this may allow the shift lock to release with brake pedal depression.
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small covered slot or rectangular opening on the right side of the shifter base, typically beneath a removable cap or trim piece.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the override cap (if present).
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter rearward toward Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the right side of the shifter base; remove the cap to access the manual shift-lock release mechanism.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shifter lock cannot be electronically released. You must use the mechanical shift-lock override slot. If the ignition cannot be turned to unlock the steering column, the front wheels will remain locked—the vehicle must be dollied or flatbedded with the front wheels off the ground.
