🚨 2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter NCV3: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 NCV3 Sprinter uses a column-mounted shift lever with electronic shift-lock that requires brake pedal depression and 12V power to move out of Park.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Locate the shift-lock override slot, which is a small rectangular opening on the left side of the column shroud near the shifter base.
  3. Remove the plastic cover cap from the override slot by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  4. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override down, move the shift lever out of Park into Neutral.
  6. Remove the tool and verify the shifter stays in Neutral before attempting to move the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock override is purely mechanical and will function normally. Insert the tool into the override slot, press down, and shift to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
