🚨 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter VS30: Emergency Neutral

The 2019 Sprinter VS30 uses a modern electronic column-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire technology and an electronic parking brake.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure wheels are chocked on both sides—the electronic parking brake may not hold without power.
  2. If any battery power remains, turn the ignition to ON (press start button without brake pedal, or insert key and turn to position II).
  3. Press the brake pedal and attempt to shift normally to neutral—the electronic shifter may still function with low battery voltage.
  4. If the shifter will not move electronically, locate the shift lock override: look for a small rectangular or circular access panel on the lower left side of the column shroud, near where the shifter stalk meets the column.
  5. Remove the access cover (may require a small flathead screwdriver to pry gently).
  6. Insert a small screwdriver or override tool into the exposed slot and push firmly to release the mechanical shift lock.
  7. While holding the override tool in position, move the shifter stalk down through Drive to the Neutral position.
  8. Verify neutral engagement by checking the dash indicator (if any power) or attempting to roll the vehicle slightly with extreme caution.
  9. If the electronic parking brake is engaged and cannot be released due to power loss, the vehicle MUST be loaded onto a flatbed with the parking brake still engaged—do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground.
  10. For any distance beyond immediate positioning, flatbed towing is mandatory due to the electronic transmission and parking brake systems.
Shift-lock override location
Small access panel on the lower left side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter stalk; exact location may require inspection as it is designed to be discreet.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic shifter may not respond at all, even with the mechanical override engaged. The electronic parking brake will remain locked and cannot be released without battery power. In a complete power-loss scenario, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with the rear wheels locked by the parking brake. A jump-start or auxiliary power supply to the 12V system is strongly recommended to release the parking brake before loading. Steering will be locked without accessory power, and power steering/braking will not function.
