The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot with a cover cap on the left side of the shifter stalk collar near the steering column
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the vehicle key to pry off the override slot cover
- With the ignition in ON position (if possible), press the brake pedal
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press firmly while moving the shifter to N
- If ignition cannot be turned on due to dead battery, you may need to jump-start the 12V system or directly power the shifter module to release the interlock - this requires accessing the battery under the driver's seat or using the jump-start terminal under the hood
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be slowly rolled
