🚨 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Sprinter (third generation, W907) uses a column-mounted electronic shifter with shift-by-wire technology and electronic parking brake.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Chock the wheels securely - the electronic parking brake may already be engaged or may not release without power
- Connect a jump pack or jumper cables to provide 12V power - the shift-by-wire system requires electrical power to function
- Turn the ignition to ON (push start button without pressing brake, or turn key to position II)
- If the electronic parking brake indicator is lit, attempt to release it by pressing the EPB switch while pressing the brake pedal
- Press the brake pedal and move the column shifter to N position normally
- If the shifter will not move despite power being present, locate the shift lock override - it is a small covered slot in the column shroud near the base of the shifter lever on the left side
- Remove the small plastic cover and insert a small screwdriver into the override slot, press firmly, then move shifter to N while holding override
- Vehicle can now be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
The 2021 Sprinter uses shift-by-wire technology and requires 12V power to shift. With absolutely zero power, the mechanical shift lock override will NOT allow shifting because the transmission itself is electronically controlled. You MUST provide external 12V power via jump pack or jumper cables to enable the transmission control module and shifter. Without any power source available, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with wheels locked - do not attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground. If the electronic parking brake cannot be released due to power issues, the rear wheels will remain locked.
