⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
- Locate the shift lock override slot: on the right side of the column shroud near the base of the shift lever, covered by a small rectangular cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the override cap
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press firmly downward
- While holding the override down, move the shift lever to N (neutral)
- If successful, the shifter will move freely; the vehicle can now roll
- If the vehicle will not shift with override, proceed to no-power procedure

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function even with the override. The transmission has an internal mechanical neutral position, but accessing it requires raising the vehicle and manually moving the transmission range selector on the transmission housing itself—this is NOT a roadside procedure. For dead battery with no override function: jump-start the 12V system minimally to power the shifter, shift to N, then disconnect. If completely dead and shift-by-wire non-functional: flatbed tow ONLY with rear wheels UP or all wheels on dollies.
