🚨 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis: Emergency Neutral

The 1997 Grand Marquis uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock interlock connected to the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake and chock the wheels
  2. Locate the shift lock override button - it is accessed through a small hole or slot near the base of the shifter lever on the column
  3. Remove the small plastic cover cap if present (usually to the right side of the shifter base)
  4. Insert a small screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override hole
  5. Press the brake pedal (if battery has any charge) or press and hold the override button/tab
  6. While holding the override, move the shifter from Park through Reverse to Neutral
  7. The vehicle can now be rolled

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override still functions - no electrical power is required for the physical override mechanism. Simply use the override button/slot and manually shift to neutral. The brake-light switch interlock is mechanical, so you don't need to press the brake pedal when using the override with dead battery.
