⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake and chock the wheels
- Locate the shift lock override button - it is accessed through a small hole or slot near the base of the shifter lever on the column
- Remove the small plastic cover cap if present (usually to the right side of the shifter base)
- Insert a small screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override hole
- Press the brake pedal (if battery has any charge) or press and hold the override button/tab
- While holding the override, move the shifter from Park through Reverse to Neutral
- The vehicle can now be rolled

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override still functions - no electrical power is required for the physical override mechanism. Simply use the override button/slot and manually shift to neutral. The brake-light switch interlock is mechanical, so you don't need to press the brake pedal when using the override with dead battery.
