🚨 2004 Mercury Marauder: Emergency Neutral
The 2004 Marauder uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with the parking brake firmly set and wheels chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this energizes the shift interlock solenoid).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shifter release button on the front of the shift lever and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not release (dead battery or failed brake switch), locate the shift interlock override access - look for a small cover or slot near the base of the steering column shroud where the shifter lever enters, typically on the right side of the column.
- Remove the cover (if present) or access the override slot.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press/hold to release the shift lock mechanism.
- While holding the override tool pressed, move the shifter to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace any covers.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the key cannot be turned to ACC position. You must use the shift interlock override slot with a tool (screwdriver or key) to manually release the shift lock mechanism and move the shifter to Neutral. The override is mechanical and does not require electrical power.
