The 2007 Mariner (first generation) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with the parking brake firmly set and wheels chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position if battery power is available.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shifter release button on the shifter handle and move to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not release (dead battery or failed brake switch), locate the shift interlock override slot in the center console near the shifter base.
- Look for a small rectangular or square plastic cover/cap on the console trim directly adjacent to the shifter lever, typically on the right side or front-right of the shifter base.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or your key to carefully pry off the cover cap.
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override tool pressed, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- Remove the tool and replace the cover cap.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot in the center console trim directly adjacent to the shifter base, typically on the right or front-right side of the shifter - access by removing a small plastic cap.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the key may not turn to ON. The shift interlock override is mechanical - remove the small cover cap near the shifter base, insert a tool into the slot, press down to release the lock mechanism, and shift to Neutral while holding the override.
