🚨 2008 Mercury Mariner: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 Mariner (second generation CD3 platform with updated console) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with the parking brake firmly set and wheels chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position if battery power is available.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the shifter release button on the shifter handle and move to Neutral.
  5. If the shifter will not release (dead battery or failed brake switch), locate the shift interlock override - look for a small covered slot or opening in the center console trim near the shifter base.
  6. The override access is typically a small rectangular cap on the console trim adjacent to the shifter, often on the right or forward-right side of the shifter base.
  7. Use a small flathead screwdriver or your key to carefully pry off the cover cap.
  8. Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
  9. While holding the override tool pressed, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  10. Remove the tool and replace the cover cap.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot in the center console trim adjacent to the shifter base - access by removing a small plastic cap, typically located on the right or forward-right side of the shifter.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the key may not turn to ON. The shift interlock override is mechanical - remove the small cover cap near the shifter base, insert a tool into the slot, press down to release the lock mechanism, and shift to Neutral while holding the override.
