The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with the parking brake firmly set and wheels chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position if battery power is available.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shifter release button on the shifter handle and move to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not release (dead battery or failed brake switch), locate the shift interlock override - look for a small covered slot or opening in the center console trim near the shifter base.
- The override access is typically a small rectangular cap on the console trim adjacent to the shifter, often on the right or forward-right side of the shifter base.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or your key to carefully pry off the cover cap.
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override tool pressed, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
