⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (not START) if possible to unlock the steering column.
- Locate the shift lock override access, which is a small opening or removable cover on the underside or right side of the steering column shroud near the shifter mechanism.
- Remove the small plastic cover if present.
- Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press or pull the release mechanism (typically a small lever or button).
- While holding the override, move the column shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the key cannot be turned due to dead battery and locked steering, you may need to rock the steering wheel slightly while attempting to turn the key.
Shift-lock override location
Small access opening on the right side or underside of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter stalk.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the steering column may be locked. Attempt to turn key to ACC while rocking steering wheel to unlock. The shift lock override itself is mechanical. If ignition cylinder is locked and cannot be turned, the shifter may remain locked; vehicle will need to be towed in Park or battery jumped to unlock steering.
