🚨 1999 Mercury Sable: Emergency Neutral

The 1999 Mercury Sable uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift interlock that prevents shifting out of Park without pressing the brake pedal.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening in the steering column shroud directly below and to the right of the shifter lever base
  4. Remove the plastic cover cap from the override slot by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and push down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button on the side of the lever and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. Remove the tool and replace the cover cap
  8. The vehicle can now be pushed or towed with the front wheels on the ground for short distances

With zero electrical power
With no battery power, the ignition key cannot be turned. The shift lock override is mechanical and still functions—locate the override slot below the shifter, remove the cover, insert a tool and push down while moving the shifter to Neutral. You may need to manually unlock the steering wheel by turning it slightly while turning the key.
