🚨 2000 Mercury Sable: Emergency Neutral
The 2000 Mercury Sable uses a column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift interlock system that prevents shifting out of Park without brake pedal application.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override—look for a small covered slot or opening on the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever, typically on the right side or underneath
- Remove the plastic cover from the override access by prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push firmly
- While holding the override mechanism down, press the shifter release button and move the lever to Neutral
- Remove the tool and replace the access cover
- The vehicle can now be moved; for towing, flatbed is recommended, or tow with front wheels off the ground
Shift-lock override location
On the steering column shroud near the shifter base, typically on the right side or below the lever—covered by a small plastic cap or trim piece
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the ignition may not turn and the steering wheel will be locked. The shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. Access the override slot, insert a tool and depress while shifting to Neutral. You may need to rock the steering wheel back and forth while turning the key to unlock the steering column.
