🚨 2001 Mercury Sable: Emergency Neutral

The 2001 Mercury Sable uses a column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift interlock system that prevents shifting out of Park without brake pedal application.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override—look for a small covered slot or opening on the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter lever, typically on the right side or underneath
  4. Remove the plastic cover from the override access by prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and push firmly
  6. While holding the override mechanism down, press the shifter release button and move the lever to Neutral
  7. Remove the tool and replace the access cover
  8. The vehicle can now be moved; for towing, flatbed is recommended, or tow with front wheels off the ground
Shift-lock override location
On the steering column shroud near the shifter base, typically on the right side or below the lever—covered by a small plastic cap or trim piece
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the ignition may not turn and the steering wheel will be locked. The shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. Access the override slot, insert a tool and depress while shifting to Neutral. You may need to rock the steering wheel back and forth while turning the key to unlock the steering column.
