The procedure
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (or ACC if the engine won't start).
- Firmly apply the parking brake.
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Keep the brake applied and ensure the vehicle is secure before releasing pressure on the override.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the console shifter assembly; look for a small rectangular or circular cap that can be pried off to access the mechanical override slot. The exact position varies but is typically on the left or front side of the shifter base.
With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead and the ignition cannot be turned on, you may still be able to use the mechanical shift lock override. However, without power, the transmission may not fully disengage the parking pawl. In this case, jump-start the 12V battery first, turn the ignition to ON, then use the override procedure. If jump-starting is not possible and the override doesn't work, the vehicle will need to be winched onto a flatbed.
