🚨 2015 Mini Cooper: Emergency Neutral
The 2015 Mini Cooper (F56 generation) has a center console electronic shifter with shift-by-wire technology.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and engage the parking brake if possible.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position using the Start/Stop button (press without brake pedal) or by inserting the key fob into the emergency slot if equipped.
- If shift lock remains engaged, locate the shift lock override access point near the shifter base.
- Look for a small removable panel or cap on the console trim surrounding the shifter base, typically on the left or front side of the shifter.
- Remove the panel/cap using a flat-blade tool or by hand if it's designed to pop off.
- Insert a small screwdriver or tool into the override release and press/hold while moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If the vehicle has the keyless Start/Stop system and the 12V battery is completely dead, you may need to access the emergency key slot (usually in the cupholder area) to provide enough power to the shifter module.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Near the shifter base on the console, likely left side or front; exact location varies with trim but should be accessible via a removable panel in the console trim
With zero electrical power
The F56 generation uses more electronic control. With zero power, you may need to insert the key fob into the emergency key slot (check owner's manual for location, often in or near the cupholder) to provide minimal power to the shifter system. The mechanical override should still work but may require this step first. Steering will remain locked; flatbed towing is strongly recommended.
