🚨 2011 Mini Countryman: Emergency Neutral

The 2011 Mini Countryman uses a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter lever with electronic shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked appropriately.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN position (do not need to start engine).
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is covered by a small rectangular cap directly to the LEFT of the shifter base, near the center console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button on top of the lever and move the shifter to N (Neutral).
  7. Remove the tool from the override slot and verify the gear indicator shows N.
  8. The vehicle can now roll freely for loading onto a flatbed or dolly.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock override still works mechanically. Follow the override procedure above: remove the cap, insert a screwdriver/key into the override slot, press down, and shift to Neutral. You do NOT need electrical power to use the mechanical override. However, you will not have power steering or power brakes, so plan accordingly when positioning the vehicle.
