🚨 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT: Emergency Neutral

The 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT uses a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter lever with a mechanical shift-lock solenoid.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked appropriately.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/ACC position if possible (does not need to start).
  3. Locate the shift-lock override access: on the left side of the shifter base, there is a small rectangular cover/slot.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off or open the cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down or push forward (depending on exact mechanism—it releases the lock pawl).
  6. While holding the override tool in place, press the shifter button on the side of the lever and move the shifter to N (Neutral).
  7. Remove the tool and replace the cover.
  8. Verify the gear indicator shows N; the vehicle can now roll.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the mechanical shift-lock override still functions. Follow the override procedure: remove the cover, insert tool into the slot, press/push to release the lock, and shift to Neutral. The 3000GT's shift-lock is mechanical and does not require electrical power to override. Be aware you will have no power steering or brake assist.
