🚨 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT: Emergency Neutral

The 1994 3000GT uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the P-R-N-D indicator panel.
  4. Remove the small rectangular plastic cap covering the override slot (it may require gentle prying with a flat screwdriver).
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot.
  6. Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle must be moved without any power, keep the override depressed while an assistant pushes the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the override mechanism is mechanical and will still function. You may need to forcefully press the override while manipulating the shifter button. The steering wheel will be locked, so the vehicle can only be pushed straight or loaded onto a flatbed.
