⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap, positioned directly to the left of the shifter base on the console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to remove the cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while pressing the brake pedal (if brake switch is the issue) or without pressing it (if dead battery).
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral.
- Remove the tool and replace the cap.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot still functions mechanically. Insert tool into override slot without pressing brake pedal, then shift to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
