🚨 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Eclipse (final model year, 4th generation) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift lock override—look for a small covered slot near the base of the shifter, typically on the driver's side of the shifter assembly.
  4. Pry off the small plastic cover cap using a flathead screwdriver or key.
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot.
  6. While holding the tool down in the override slot, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. Remove the tool and reinstall the cover cap.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the driver's side base of the shifter assembly on the center console; exact position may require inspection of the shifter surround trim.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override still works. Use the override slot without pressing the brake pedal to release the shifter into Neutral. Steering wheel will remain locked; vehicle must be towed on a flatbed or with front wheels raised.
