The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small rectangular cover near the base of the shifter console, often on the right side or front face of the shifter surround.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park.
- Shift to Neutral, then release the override and remove the tool.
