The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if any battery charge remains
- Locate the shift lock override access - there is a small rectangular cover cap on the console near the shifter base, typically on the left side of the shifter
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the ignition key to carefully pry off the cover cap
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While maintaining downward pressure on the override, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If battery is completely dead, keep the override pressed and move the shifter to Neutral without using the brake pedal
