🚨 2004-2012 Mitsubishi Galant: Emergency Neutral

The 2004-2012 Galant (ninth generation) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock in a traditional PRNDL gate pattern.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if any battery charge remains
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - there is a small rectangular cover cap on the console near the shifter base, typically on the left side of the shifter
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the ignition key to carefully pry off the cover cap
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While maintaining downward pressure on the override, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. If battery is completely dead, keep the override pressed and move the shifter to Neutral without using the brake pedal

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override fully bypasses the shift interlock. Remove the access cap, insert tool into slot, press down firmly, and shift to Neutral. No power is required for the mechanical override to function.
