⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the P position
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal end of the key to pry off the small plastic cap
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar thin tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If no brake function, continue holding the override and pull the shifter to Neutral

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override can still be accessed mechanically. You will not be able to turn the ignition to ACC, but the override release is purely mechanical and does not require power. Simply access the override slot, press the release, and move the shifter to Neutral manually.
